Fred Tyler 1914
The younger brother of pitcher Lefty Tyler spent spring training with the Boston Braves in 1914. The May 28, 1914, issue of Leslie's Illustrated Weekly quoted Lefty as saying "My brother Fred catches me better than anyone I ever had", but by the publication date, Fred had been sent to the minor leagues without appearing in a regular-season game in the spring. He was brought back in October, after the Braves had clinched the pennant and had three straight double-headers to close the season. Manager George Stallings wanted to rest his regular catchers, so Fred caught all six games (but Lefty did not pitch in any of them), and was 2-for-19 with a walk and a sacrifice hit at the plate. Behind the plate, he had one passed ball and threw out just 5 of 15 base stealers in the six games. He did not appear in the World Series, and in the off-season the team sold his contract to Rochester (who then sent him to Syracuse). Fred never again appeared in the major leagues.
