Bill Malarkey 1908
The professional career of pitcher Bill Malarkey began in 1907 with the Sharon Giants of the Ohio-Pennsylvania League. He began the 1908 season with the New York Giants of the National League and made fifteen appearances, all in relief, at various times during the season. He also pitched for Buffalo of the Eastern League that same season. Malarkey never again played in the major leagues, and pitched in the minors through 1915. In the picture below, an excerpt of a group photo of the Giants' pitchers published in the New York Daily Tribune on March 22, 1908, Malarkey is wearing a uniform that looks like a St. Louis Browns uniform from 1902, 1904, or 1905. He had no prior experience with the Browns; Sporting Life does not indicate that he was ever on the roster of that team. The most likely explanations are that either Malarkey had previously played semi-professionally with a team in St. Louis that had uniforms that resembled the Browns', or that he had shown up at spring training and forgotten to bring an old uniform and was lent one by a teammate. (Players at that time did not receive new uniforms until the season opener.)
