I can't speak about templates, but what I tend to do is make a backup, play around with testing, then restore my league from the backup. That seems to keep everything. It's like a snapshot of everything in the league from the point where the backup was made.

Someone else may be able to speak more authoritatively to templates and quickstarts. I find that restoring from a backup suits my purposes.
