Arthur Nichols 1898
Art Nichols (apparently also known as Charley) began his major league career as a catcher with Chicago in the National League. He appeared in 14 games in 1898, 17 in 1899, and just 8 in 1900. In 1901 he was with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he played 47 games as a catcher and 40 more as an outfielder, and appeared in 93 games total. In 1902 he was primarily a first baseman, with 56 of his 73 games at first base. The same was true in 1903; he played 25 games at first out of 36 total, with two games behind the plate. His batting average that last season was just .192, and the Sporting Life of July 18th noted that he had been released. He never again played in the major leagues. The photo is from 1901.
