1945 All-Star Game: The West Make it Two in a Row

--------

Embro, Dunwich (BP) – The Western League won their second consecutive All-Star contest to even the overall series at 4 games apiece. This year, the eighth annual mid-season classic was held at Speaker Stadium in Embro, situated along the north shore of Lake Blyth. Partly cloudy skies with just a warm, gentle breeze blowing out to center greeted the 27,000 fans who packed the stadium to witness the proceedings.

At first, it appeared that the game would be a low scoring affair. But it suddenly turned lop-sided, as the Westerners broke open the floodgates in the top of the 9th inning. The scoring highlights are given below.

Kingston’s RHP Joey Cumberledge started for the Westerners for the second straight year, while Braeland City’s LHP David Cooling got the nod for the Eastern League.

Top of the 6th:
With rookie RHP Hun Park taking the hill to start the inning, C Danny Trowbridge draws a lead off walk. Back-to-back singles by PH Nicky Willis and PH Wenceslas Jasmin load the bases with nobody out. PH Jamie Couch then follows with a single of his own, scoring Trowbridge for the game's first run.
After inducing a pop-up (F6) from 1B Bruno Lapthorne, Park is replaced by RHP Aaron Saunderson.
PH Wen-huan Liu then comes through with a single scoring Willis before the Easterners can escape the inning.
Western All-Stars 2 – Eastern All-Stars 0

Bottom of the 7th:
RHP Francis Slocock takes the mound for the Westerners and immediately gives up a walk to PH Yoshino Ito on four straight pitches.
RF Mark Elston reaches safely on an error (E1), putting runners on 1B and 2B. Immediately after Ito steals 3B and Elston takes 2B, C Kane Broom hits a sac fly to centerfield, scoring Ito.
CF Jon Moreau then follows and flies out to centerfield. Elston tags up on the play and advances to 3B. But the throw to 3B sails off course (E8), allowing Elston to score the tying run.
Western All-Stars 2 – Eastern All-Stars 2

Top of the 9th:

With one out, LHP Hirotada Fukushima surrenders three straight walks to 2B Katsunan Chikafuji, C Scott Weller and LF Nicky Willis, loading the bases.
SS Jayden Whiteway then singles in both Chikafuji and Weller, giving the Westerners the lead once more.
After CF Jamie Couch hits into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners, 3B Shelby Cain doubles, scoring both Willis and Couch. That ends Fukushima's day.
But his replacement, RHP Bradley Paris, promptly gives up a two-run home run to 1B Wen-huan Liu, giving the Western All-Stars a comfortable lead.

In the bottom of the 9th, PH Elijah Sheppard singles with two out. But RHP Harley Bracher gets PH Phillip Ferguson to ground out (3-1) to end the game.
Western All-Stars 8 – Eastern All-Stars 2

Kingston’s Wen-huan Liu won Player of the Game honours, going 2-3 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R.
