1960 Pittsburgh Pirates (#56) 4, 1972 Oakland Athletics (#73) 0
MVP: Dick Groat (Pit 1960) .500/.526/.778, 1 HR, 3 RBI
This series was a snoozer, with Pittsburgh not only winning, but dominating in every aspect. Even Game 2, which was the closest game, was 5-0 Pittsburgh late in the game, with the A's scoring all 3 of their runs in the final 2 innings, in their attempt to make a comeback. The A's Darold Knowles and Blue Moon Odom each had ERAs over 10, and Dave Hamilton, in giving up 6 earned runs in only 1/3 of an inning, had an ERA of 162.00. Both Sal Bando and Tim Cullen hit well, but no other Oakland regular hit over .214. On the other side, nearly every Pirate had a great series, with Dick Groat, Smoky Burgess and Don Hoak all hitting over .400. The Pirates only used 4 pitchers, and none of them really faced any trouble.
Scores:
Pit 7 Oak 2
Pit 5 Oak 3
Pit 18 Oak 1
Pit 5 Oak 1
The 1960 Pirates' next opponent will be the 1942 Cardinals, who had a 1st round bye.
