I'm the OP. I am, for the record, using nVidia drivers 3.67 on a 960. I'm too much in love with Ubuntu MATE 16.04
to stay with 14.04, on which the game worked fine. Hopefully, the Ubuntu and OOTP devs will straighten this out.
