2009 New York Yankees (#39) 4, 1973 Oakland Athletics (#90) 0
MVP: Jorge Posada (NYY 2009) .529/.579/.941, 2 HR, 7 RBI
Not long ago, we had a series where the 1972 A's were easily swept by the 1960 Pirates. Now the 1973 A's have been swept by the 2009 Yankees. The difference is, the first 3 games of this series were highly competative. Game 1 was scoreless until the bottom of the 8th, when the Yankees scored a single run. The A's immediately matched it in the top of the 9th, and the game went into extra innings. The game ended in the 11th inning, with a leadoff double by Melky Cabrera, followed by a walk-off double by Jerry Hairston Jr. Game 2 featured a great pitching performance by Oakland's Vida Blue, who only gave up single runs (one unearned) in the 5th and 7th innings. But he was outplayed by AJ Burnett, who gave up only 2 hits in 8 innings. Mariano Rivera pitched an uneventful 9th. While the first two games were pitchers' duels, Game 3 was anything but. The Yankees scored 3 in the 1st and 4 in the 3rd, but the A's came back with 5 of their own in the bottom of the 3rd. They then scored 1 and 2 runs, respectively, in the 6th, for an 8-7 Yankee lead. In the 9th, the Yanks burst it open with another 6 runs. The A's scored 1 more run in an attempted comeback that fell way short.
Scores:
NYY 2 Oak 1 (11)
NYY 2 Oak 0
NYY 14 Oak 8
NYY 11 Oak 2
The 2009 Yankees' next opponent will be the 1980 Phillies, who beat the 1931 Cardinals in 6 games.
