National League Championship Series Game 2
We're ready for Game 2 of the National League Championship Series between the 1975 Cincinnati Reds and the 1969 New York Mets. The Mets lead the series 1-0 on a 4-3 win in Game 1. Cincinnati is looking to even the series by sending Don Gullett (2-3, 4.28) to the mound. New York starts Jerry Koosman (5-0, 1.35), who has been practically untouchable in the postseason. The Reds strike first in this one, when Johnny Bench hits a solo shot into left to give his team a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd.
The Mets would regain the lead in the bottom of the 3rd, however. Ed Charles leads the inning off with a walk and moves to second on Koosman's sac bunt. Tommie Agee delivers a base hit past short, scoring Charles and tying the game 1-1. Cleon Jones comes up and draws a walk and Art Shamsky singles to load the bases. Donn Clendenon would hit a sac fly to right, allowing Agee to score from third and giving the Mets the lead. Ken Boswells single to right would score Jones from second to make it 3-1 Mets. Jerry Grote strikes out looking to end the inning. Mets lead 3-1. New York would add to it's lead in the bottom of the 5th, when Clendenon hits a three run shot over the left field wall to make it 6-1. Gullet is chased and Jack Billingham (0-0, 2.08, 4 G, 4.1 IP) comes in to pitch. Billingham quickly strikes out two batters to end the inning, but the damage is done. Mets lead 6-1.
New York would blow the game wide open in the bottom of the 6th. Bud Harrelson leads off the inning with a double to right and would score on Ed Charles base hit. Koosman would again sacrifice Charles to second. Agee gets an infield hit, moving Charles to third. Agee then steals second, while Jones gets hit by a pitch to load the bases. Art Shamsky takes the first pitch he sees from Billingham and hits a GRAND SLAM over the wall in right center. Billingham is relieved of his duties, as Clay Kirby (0-0, 0.00, 3 G, 5.2 IP) is brought in to strike out the final two batters of the inning. Mets lead 11-1. The Mets would add another run in the 7th and Joe Morgan would hit a two run homer in the 8th, but the game is over.
