Burns, Semien, Vogt Power A’s past White Sox in Opening Day Victory
April 5, 2016

The Oakland Athletics started the 2016 season win an impressive 7-4 win against the Chicago White Sox at O.co Coliseum. The A’s blasted three homeruns off of 4-time All-Star Chris Sale. Billy Burns started the scoring off in the first, with a leadoff solo homerun to tie the score at 1. Stephen Vogt then hit a two run shot to deep right field in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score at 3. And Marcus Semien added a solo shot as part of a 3-run 8th inning for the A’s, which extended their lead to 7-3 at the time.

The White Sox scored a run in each of the first three innings, but Sonny Gray got stronger as the game went on, allowing 8 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs while striking out 8 in 7 innings of work. He was named player of the game for his strong efforts. Bob Melvin then handed the ball off to Liam Hendriks, who struck out two in the 8th. Oakland ran into a bit of trouble in the 9th when Fernando Rodriguez allowed 2 hits and a run at which point Sean Doolittle had to come on to earn a 1-out save, his first of the year.

Josh Reddick aided the Oakland cause with a run-scoring walk in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the right fielder went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk.

"Obviously it’s nice to win the first one, but it’s a long season and we have many games to go," said Reddick. "We're already looking forward to the next game."
