Oakland A's May Recap

Team Notes
- The Athletics went 16-12 in the month of May and now sit 4 games out of first place in the AL West and 2.5 games out of the last wild card spot.
- The trade with the San Francisco Giants is already paying dividends. Denard Span is hitting .362 in 10 games since being acquired and has driven in 5 runs. Clayton Blackburn has had mixed results, with one really good start and one really bad start. He’s 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA over 11.2 innings since joining Oakland’s rotation.
- Sonny Gray is starting to build his case for the Cy Young Award. He went 4-0 in May with a 2.87 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. He struck out 34 batters and walked only 5 in 5 starts and 37.2 innings pitched. He’s tied for the league lead in Wins with 8, and has the 3^rd most strikeouts in the American League, trailing only Corey Kluber and Chris Sale.
- Billy Burns will rejoin the team after being activated off the disable list. He missed the entire month of May with a torn thumb ligament. OF Andrew Lambo was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the roster. Burns is expected to be back up both Khris Davis and Denard Span in the outfield.
- Speaking of Khris Davis, he holds the team lead for homeruns with 10. He had a great month, hitting .255 with 8 homeruns and 21 RBI, along with 8 doubles. His hitting has been seen as the catalyst for Oakland’s winning ways.
- The first year player draft will be held on Monday June 6^th. The A’s hold the 6^th overall pick, and also a 1^st round supplemental pick. (37^th overall).

5/6 – Phillies SP Aaron Nola tore his labrum and will miss the next 4 months.
5/9 – Angels SP Garrett Richards will miss 4 months with a partially torn labrum.
5/14 – Orioles SP Dylan Bundy to miss 3 months with a ruptured finger tendon.
5/14 – Mariners Robinson Cano to miss 3 weeks with shoulder soreness.
5/20 – Angels 1B Albert Pujols broke a bone in his elbow and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

5/30 – Oriles SP Yovani Gallardo to miss 1 month due to shoulder soreness.
5/31 – 1B Adrian Gonzalez hits his 300^th career homerun.
