Streaking! A’s Host First Place Astros Just 1 Game Out of First Place
September 16, 2016

The Oakland A’s, who on September 1st were in 4th place 7 games out of first place, are now 1 game out of first and in 2nd place as they open up a three game series with the first place Houston Astros. This is a pivotal series for the young Oakland squad, who was pronounced dead by almost every analyst in the industry. Oakland has been on an absolute tear, going 13-3 to start the month of September and jumping both the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners and now sit on the precipice of jumping the Astros as well.
The team started off the month taking two of three from the Red Sox, thanks to a pair of strong pitching performances from Sonny Gray and Felix Doubront. The team then went on a 6-game winning streak, sweeping both the Angels and the Mariners on the backs of gems by whatever member of the starting rotation took the mound that night. After dropping one to the Royals Oakland rattled off another 5 wins in a row, this time with the bats coming alive. Yesterday, the Texas Rangers handed the team just their third loss of the month.
The offense this month has been unreal. Five players this month are hitting over .300 – Khris Davis (.371, 8 2B, 6 HR, 14 RBI), Jed Lowrie (.360, 5 2B, 6 RBI), Eric Sogard (.358, 2 HR, 8 RBI), Andrew Lambo (.321, 8 HR, 15 RBI) and Yonder Alonso (.302, 1 HR, 8 RBI).
And here we are, with a pivotal three game set against the division leaders. The A’s will have to do it against Houston’s top three starters as well – Colin McHugh, Patrick Corbin and Doug Fister. Meanwhile, Oakland will trot out Kendall Graveman, Felix Doubront and Clayton Blackburn. Whatever ends up happening the rest of the way, it’s very impressive what this A’s team has done after everyone counted them out.
