I'm one of the five. It's unusual (if not unprecedented) to see a bid that high with so much time remaining... the crazy bidding tends to happen in the last 10 seconds or so. If I'm interested in a particular item I'll usually enter a low-ball bid early just to "bookmark" the auction; depending on how things look, I may or may not enter a last minute bid.
I just found it interesting that Merkle noted the significance of this item and the market seems to have noticed as well.
