Another weird reference to baseball on a comedic TV show came on the David Letterman show in 1989 when Paul Shaffer, who was involved in a lot of skits in the early years of the show, plays a Cardinals fan who is listening to the radio and goes berserk when it's announced that Red Schoendienst was elected by the Veterans Committee to the Hall Of Fame. It's strange and disrespectful and a little unfair to Red. Probably miffed a lot of Red's and cardinals' fans. I know if they'd done the same thing a few years later about Richie Ashburn's election Phillies fans, including myself, would have been angry and insulted.
