ABL Announces Expansion Teams
Today the ABL announced the next two expansion teams. They are expected to join in 2020. The teams are the Newcastle Eagles and Geelong Baycats. Newcastle, will feature the tradition colors of Newcastle, Blue and Red and will take on the name of the old Hunter Eagles from the 1st ABL iteration. Geelong, meanwhile, sharing an ownership group with the AFL Geelong Cats, will be called the BayCats and will use dark blue and a sea green as their primary marks.
The ABL did not rule out further expansion, this brings the ABL roster to 10. Flowers had repeatedly stated a goal to get to 12 teams before the media contract is up (2022). Some speculate second Sydney and Melbourne teams while others see the ABL returning to successful sides such as Western Australia, South Australia, or even Brisbane.
