Expansion Draft 2020

ABL Expansion Draft and Plans Announced

The ABL has officially announced plans to expand with second franchises in Western Australia and South Australia. These licenses were awarded to Fremantle and Western Adelaide. This is after these two franchises and organizations from Melbourne and Sydney had began the process of creating an upstart league. This move by the ABL all but nips that process in the butt. Additionally, many believe this move will secure political backing from Western Australia and South Australia. Fremantle will ground share with Perth for the beginning of the year and will have their ground built on the harbour near the markets. Port Adelaide will be the name of the West Adelaide license. Port's facility will be completed along Port Creek near the Wharf and should be ready for the 2020 ABL Season.

These two additions along with Geelong and Newcastle, will position the ABL well to air on free to view TV. Bids have began to be submitted by Chanels 7,9, and 10. The ABL, should, with these expansions foster regional rivalries while creating a national competition.

The expansion draft will take place on February 20th.
