We seem to have a staff-full of Bill Staffords, also. Well, two, anyway. As is usual, one has the MLB ID and major-league stats, the other the MiLB ID/stats. Don't know why, as there's no double-name issue or anything for Stafford, to my knowledge.
I did notice that the MLB ID was "staffbi01", using "bi" for "Bill", whereas the MiLB ID was "staffo001wil", using "wil" for "william", but I'm dubious that this is the cause, given the number of Bill/William players who don't have clones running loose. I checked the contemporaneous Bill Robinson, for example. No such issue. So, all I know is that I don't know.
The last possibility is the birthdate; MLB Stafford is listed as being born on August 13, 1939 but MiLB Bill has 8/13/1938 as his birthdate. Most records cite 1939 as being correct, but in Ball Four, the newly-30 Bouton is asked to judge an age contest of his fellow 30-year-olds and Stafford is one of the contestants. Since another contestant, Tommy Davis (b. 3/21/1939) is cited as being the only 29-year-old in the group (others included Ray Oyler and Don Mincher), it would be odd for Bouton to call Stafford "30" if he was in fact five months younger than Davis. Unless he just plain goofed, I guess.
In any event, we have one more Stafford than we need. (No disrespect to the actual Bill Stafford, who died in 2001.) Thanks in advance, as usual.
