Lee Mazzilli 1976 and Brad Komminsk 1983

Today's TV released was very interesting to me as 2 players featured were both "can't miss" prospects in Lee Mazzilli and Brad Kommisnk

Mazzilli was a local NY kid from Brooklyn who blazed his way through the Mets system making his big league debut as a 21 year old and becoming their opening day CF in 1977 at the age of 22. He had 4 solid years before the Mets traded their hometown sweetheart to the Rangers on 4/1/82 in a trade that brought the Mets 2 very solid young starting pitchers in Ron Darling and Walt Terrell

Komminsk was the 4th overall pick by the Braves in 1979 out of HS in Ohio. He showed plus power as he climbed the ladder in the Braves system hitting 20 plus HR 5 seasons in a row (his best season was 1981 at Durham when he swatted 33 homers and drove in 104) He was a saber-metric (before his time) darling too as he took plenty of walks including getting 110 of them in that 1981 season. He was not a HUGE all or nothing power hitter either and the Braves faithful dreamed of an OF of Murphy and Komminsk to carry them through the 80's. His movie star good looks (also said of Mazzilli) made him an obvious choice to share the franchise star with Murphy.

Unfortunately, unlike Mazzilli, Komminsk arrived with a thud batting just .203 as a rookie while not showcasing the patient power hitter he had been in the minors as he struck out 77 times and walked just 29 times in 301 at bats as a rookie in 1984. 1985 did not go much better and his power was not evident as he hit just 4 HR in 300 AB to go along with a .227 .AVG, The Braves had him spend all of 1986 at AAA but he was not the same as he hit .234 with 13 HR in 465 AB. He went to Milwaukee in 1987 and, again, showed the promise he once had as a "can't miss" prospect as he crushed 32 HR and drove in 95 in the high altitude of Denver. He was given another opportunity in Cleveland in 1989 getting 198 AB and hitting 8 HR. But he bounced around after that getting big league time with San Francisco, Baltimore, and Oakland and finishing his big league career with 23 HR in 986 AB to go along with a .218 .AVG.

I know quite a few baseball people consider Komminsk to be one of the all time no doubters as a prospect...at the same time those same baseball people would consider him one of the biggest "can't miss" busts of all time
