Danny Sheaffer 1987

Danny Sheaffer made the Red Sox out of Spring Training in 1987 when their starting catcher, Rich Gedman, started the season on the disabled list. Sheaffer had hit .340 at AAA Pawtucket in 1986 and was third on the depth chart behind Gedman and Marc Sullivan.

Sheaffer made his debut on April 9th when he started against the Brewers in Milwaukee going 2-4 hitting his 1st big league HR in the 7th off of Chris Bosio. He stayed with the Red Sox until Gedman came back in early May. He earned two more call ups with Boston in 1987 (July and September) finishing the year just 8-66 with 1 HR.

He saw brief time with the Indians in 1989 before finally settling into a big league backup role in Colorado and St. Louis from 1993-1997. He has remained in the game as a coach and, most recently, managed the Rays rookie league team in Princeton
