Just to clarify: Though Gedman did miss the last two months of 1987 due to injury, his April absence was not injury related. He was ineligible to sign with the Red Sox until May 1st because he didn't receive any free agent offers from other teams by the January 8th deadline (thus allowing Sheaffer to break camp with the big club). This stupid former rule caught other high-profile players in its grasp (Tim Raines, Ron Guidry, Lance Parrish and Bob Boone, among others) and led to the Players Association anti-collusion suit against MLB.
