This is a really late response, but I had the same thing happen. My work-around is to start Steam with this command:

STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0 steam

There was a Steam client update that switched the behavior on Linux to use host OS libraries instead of the Steam-packaged libraries, and on some Linux OS, the game crashes with the host libraries.

I filed an OOTP bug for this, gave them all the details, and there was no progress.
