Marty Callaghan 1922
One more attempt to identify the Cub holding the bat in the photo on the previous page....
Dto7 suggested in a private message that the Cub cap may have been from the seasons 1922 or 1923, or possibly even earlier. That got me to thinking about the full series of photos. The scoreboard seems to be the same in all of them. The rest of the background is reasonably consistent as well. It does not seem to be a bad assumption that the photos were all taken on the same day. The Cub manager is wearing a uniform from the 1922 or 1923 season. So I concentrated my search on left-handed hitting position players from those two seasons. The best fit seems to be Marty Callaghan. A photo of him is on the left. A flipped photo of the mystery batter, so that he is properly shown as a lefty, is shown on the right.
Having looked at the managers' photo again, I see that the Pirates' uniform is from no earlier than 1923. So the managers in the first photo must have been Bill Killefer (Cubs) and Bill McKechnie (Pirates).
