MIDWAY SWEEPS TARS, TAKES 1ST PRO CUP
50 years of frustration is over... the Midway Wolves have finally won the IPA Pro Cup... and they did it in grand style, sweeping the favored Taranto Tars in four games... for the fourth consecutive game, the Wolves totally dominated the Tars again, trouncing them 9-1 in game four... Taranto only got 16 hits in the entire series... Yank Atchley (5-0/2.41) breezed past them, stopping the Tars on just four hits, striking out four and walking two... it was his 5th postseason victory... Midway had it on the mound and at the plate, too... the Wolves smashed 14 hits, including solo roundtrippers by 3B Jamey Southwick (.186) and LF Lew Dillinger (.231)... Dillinger drove in three runs in all and SS Kax Clark (.400) two in the rout.
Winning skipper Bobby Dorignac was jubilant in the press room, "Couldn't win it for 19 years as a player, but finally got the job done as the manager... what a bunch of glorious guys... our pitchers were very good in the season, but were out of sight in the playoffs... to go 12-2 against the likes of Denton City, Turon and Taranto is remarkable."
Losing manager Augie Marshall gave his observations, too. "I think it is obvious to everybody... Midway was the superior team... their pitching was stupendous... and the hitting was solid and reliable... we never had a chance... Atchley, Chase and McCloud were not just good... they were brilliant."
The Midway mound corps held Taranto to just three runs and 16 hits in the four games... the Tars hit a pathetic .131 overall, while the Wolves were batting .254 and scoring 27 runs on 34 hits.
