I don't use historical transactions or lineups. I change the default pitching rotation to "always highest rested" and "allow SP in relief" in playing before 1960. I use free agency and the draft regardless of era because it is more fun and I feel good about liberating the players.
I have started using historical minors because I want the extra players but there are always some players that are overrated. I live with that and the unrealistic frequency of season-ending injuries (even on low) because it is more fun with more things to manage.
I usually edit the financials and owner traits to make them more realistic and put all of the teams on an even footing to start. I also edit the GM tendencies to remove the extremes, so I don't have some team trading all of their stars in the first year. I sometimes edit the contracts of star players to keep them signed to their historical teams for a few years, otherwise the first free agent class can be too rich.
