The Yankees missed out on a run in the top of the second when Clarke was thrown out trying to score from second on a single by McKinney.
Instead, it was the Rangers with the first run of the game as Burroughs came through in the bottom of the third with a 2-out RBI single. Ford almost got one as well but this time it was Harrah who was thrown out trying to score from second.
After three: Texas 1 New York 0.
Maddox added to the Rangers lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single but Suarez was the next one to be thrown out trying to score from second.
In the bottom of the fifth, Harrah was again thrown out at home, this time trying to score from third on a Nelson flyout to left.
Through six innings, the Rangers had 11 hits but just 2 runs.
After six: Texas 2 New York 0.
Burroughs got an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 3 run lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out. Hand then walked Kenney and the shutout was gone. Horacio Pina replaced Hand on the mound. Munson ground into a double play but a run scored and the lead was down to one. Murcer, however, grounded out to retire the side.
Jack Aker took the mound for the Yankees in the bottom of the eighth. The Rangers loaded the bases with two out but Harrah flew out to end the inning.
Pina struck out Ellis to begin the top of the ninth for his 50th K of the season. Then the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Charlie Spikes came on to pinch hit. He hit a grounder to short and Harrah threw out the runner heading home for the second out. White then grounded out to second and the Rangers survived.
Final score: Texas 3 New York 2.
