Dicky Dost (1947 - 2017)

Richard "Dicky" Dost passed away on August 5, 2017 following a short battle with brain cancer. The Virginia native, a 6' 3" righthander, was All-State in both baseball and football at James Madison High School (and was inducted into that school's Hall of Fame in 1997). The Mets drafted Dicky in the 5th round of the infamous 1966 draft--the draft in which they made Steve Chilcott the #1 overall pick. Dost pitched for just two seasons in the low minors, including a brief stay with the Durham Bulls (then a Mets Single-A affiliate), before leaving the game and going into the lumber business where he was quite successful. He actually pitched very little--just 10 games over the two years. He did well for Rookie level Marion in 1966, going 1-0 with an ERA of 0.50 across 5 games (3 starts). He pitched less (and less well) in 1967. He finished his career 1-1 with an overall ERA of 2.40. Though I could find no accounts explaining his quick exit from the game, the pattern is certainly consistent with arm trouble.

The image of Dicky accompanied his obituary and is likely his high school portrait.
