Kelly led off the bottom of the first with his 20th double of the season. Melton brought him home with an RBI single. Hand ended the first by striking out May to record his 80th K of the season.
Harrah tied the game in the top of the third with an RBI double.
After three: Texas 1 Chicago 1.
The White Sox loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the fourth. But Kelly grounded to short to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, May gave Chicago the lead back with an RBI single.
After six: Chicago 2 Texas 1.
The Rangers had runners at first and second with two out in the top of the seventh when the White Sox went to the bullpen and brought Cy Acosta out to pitch. Maddox then grounded to short to retire the side.
Maddox kept it a 1-run game when he threw Andrews out at home as the Chicago baserunner was trying to score from second on a single by Melton.
Terry Forster took the mound for the White Sox in the top of the eighth.
Maddox came through again in the bottom of the eighth as this time it was Herrmann thrown out at home trying to score from second on a single by Orta.
Maddox then came through with the bat in the top of the ninth with a game-tying RBI single.
Paul Lindblad came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth for the Rangers. Pinch hitter Rick Reichardt led off with a single, the White Sox 10th hit of the game. Two batters later, Chicago had runners at first and second and one out. Walt Williams singled and Reichardt scored to end the game.
Final score: Chicago 3 Texas 2.
