TARS RALLY PAST B'HAWKS IN 7TH GAME
Favored Taranto had a tough time with lightly-regarded Valka... the Tars won the first two games, lost the next three and then escaped postseason elimination by rallying to take the final two games of the series on their homefield at the Palazzo di Sport... Taranto prevailed four games to three... game seven was an intense duel and went to Taranto 5-4, decided in the last of the seventh on a solo home run by 3B Gaetano Palombo (.241/4 RBI)... Palombo led the Tars with three RBIs... RF Lenny Buisson (.500/5 RBI) also went deep for Taranto... it was his fourth clout of the series... manager Augie Marshall got a gritty performance from his ace, Phil Castle, who gave up four runs in the second frame and then blanked the Blackhawks the rest of the way... Castle (2-1/2.42) was touched for six hits, fanned seven and walked two and went the distance, outpitching Valka's ace Eerik Jogi (1-2/3.42)... Jogi also tossed a complete game... the Tars collected nine hits... only three runs were earned.

Neither team was expected to challenge for the IPA Pro Cup trophy... Taranto was ranked seventh in the Pro Cup poll, while Valka was the eighth and last choice... Taranto now advances to the Ruthlandian League Championship Series, opposed by the Wynnamac Sundowners. the conquerors of mighty Middlefield... the Macs were slight underdogs in the RU Division Series... they were the fourth pick in the postseason poll, the Roosters were the second selection... last year's Pro Cup champion Midway is rated number one with Turon ranked number three... they will go up against one another in the Tycobbian title series.

Taranto reached the Pro Cup Finals last year, losing to champ Midway in a four-game sweep... the Tars used the home-run ball to get by the feisty Blackhawks... Taranto belted 11 out of the park in the series, outscored Valka 28-22, but hit only .238... Marshall praised his pitching staff, who composed a fine 2.70 ERA, holding the Blackhawks to just a .176 BA in the seven games... Marshall gave a lot of credit to starters Phil Castle (2-1/2.42), Armani Pizziconi (1-1/1.80) and Freddy DeAngelis (1-0/2.25) for keeping Valka off the scoreboard... but he also complimented his fine trio of hitters, Lenny Buisson (.500/4 HR/5 RBI), Kuma Toyota (.357/2 HR/9 RBI) and Renzo Caruso (.200/4 HR/6 RBI).

Valka skipper Arno Vainmaa was proud of the way his team performed... "The Tars know they were in a series... we scrapped and scrapped and almost pulled an upset... Augie has a talented team with good pitching and good firepower... we wish him and his Tars well in the playoffs."
