Ruthlandian Union League Championship Series - Game 1
HAYES HALTS TARS, MACS TAKE OPENER
The Ruthlandian LCS opener at Granger Field in Wynnamac was a splendid duel between the Macs' Sammy Hayes and the Tars' Phil Castle... Hayes (1-1/1.59) fired a 2-0 shutout and gave the Sundowners a leg up in the RU title series... the 34-year-old portsider held Taranto to just five hits, while striking out six Tars and walking only one... Castle (2-2/2.53) was sharp, too, giving up only two runs in his six innings... the Taranto bats never had a chance against Hayes... Wynnamac got its first run in the second frame on a sacrifice fly by 3B Todd Bretton (.222//1 RBI) and the last one in the fourth on an RBI single by 2B Jonathan Garrett (.600/1 RBI).
Tycobbian Union League Championship Series - Game 1
MIDWAY'S MCGILL QUIETS TURON IN GAME 1
In the Tycobbian Union title series at Joe Wolf Stadium in Midway, the hometown Wolves and IPA champion drew first blood in the first game of the best-of-seven affair... 25-game winner Arnie McGill (2-0/1.64) was erratic, but hurled Midway to a 5-1 victory, stopping Turon on one run and five hits over the first six and two-thirds innings... McGill wore himself out on a rain-delayed afternoon, walking six Typhoons... closer Jeffrey Leonard (1-0/1.17/3 saves/4 G) came to his rescue and got the final five outs... 24-game winner Yancey Hedges (2-1/3.13) suffered the loss... it just wasn't his day... Midway smacked him for four runs and six hits in his six-plus innings... CF Ernesto Diaz (.261/5 RBI) homered and doubled to drive in two runs for the Wolves... 3B Jamey Southwick (.429/3 RBI) also swatted one out of the park... leading Turon was CF Max Mullinax (.217) with three hits: a double, triple and homer... Midway captured the Islands' Pro Cup trophy last season, topping the Taranto Tars in a four-game sweep... the Wolves are favored to take the IPA title again.
