How big of a salary do they have? If they are not in your future plans, then just designate them for assignment and waive them and hope someone claims them on waivers. If you did this and no one claimed them, just eat the salary and move on.
The only other option is to keep them on the roster for the first month of the season and see if they actually can still contribute as part time/bench players. I have seen guys near 40 have productive seasons when used as platoon players.
