MIDWAY'S LEONARD HONORED AS PRO CUP MVP
There were no dominating performances in the Pro Cup Series this year... just lots of good ones on the well-balanced IPA champion Midway Wolves... manager Bobby Dorignac's club ravaged through the playoffs to capture its second Pro Cup trophy in a row finishing up with a flair -- a four-game sweep over the Wynnamac Sundowners... taking the 2054 Pro Cup Most Valuable Player honor was standout closer Jeffrey Leonard, who appeared in 8 of Midway's 14 games, posting a 3-0 mark, 4 saves and a 1.50 ERA... running a distant second in the voting was starter Arnie McGill (4-0/3.24/6 starts)... shortstop Kax Clark was the only position player that got much support... he hit .369 in the postseason in 14 games, scoring 12 runs and driving in 6... but no one came close to Leonard in the poll by the broadcast media in the Islands.
Dorignac was especially high in praise for the 29-year-old bullpen specialist Leonard, now in his 8th season with the Wolves... "The sportswriters had a tough choice... 6 or 8 of my guys contributed greatly to our title... but we may not have won the Pro Cup without the job Leonard did... when he came in, the game was on the line and he came through for us each time."
Career-wise Leonard is 30-18 with 62 saves in 245 games and has a splendid 1.64 ERA.
***** LEONARD ***** MCGILL ***** CLARK *****
