Manny "Retired" in July '91 after being taken No.1 overall in '90 Draft

Hello,

New to the game and I have started several historical seasons already and played them through, but having trouble with the season that I started for the 1990 Astros.

In 1990, I promoted Kenny Lofton up to AA and he was obviously one of the better players in the system. He "retired" after the season to pursue a basketball career, which obviously sucks, but is understandable, as he was, you know, a basketball player.

I finish with the worst record in the league, get the No. 1 pick in the draft and take Man-Ram.

Then, in July, after I had promoted a 19-year old Manny up to AA (from his player card):

12/15/1990: Drafted in the 1990 first-year player draft (Round 1, Pick 1, 1st overall pick) by the Houston Astros
......
......
.......
6/16: Was selected to the 1991 Texas League All-Star Game
7/1: Wins the TL TL Batter of the Month Award
7/10: Became a minor league free agent ..... Retired from professional baseball

I get Lofton retiring to play basketball, but I'm at a loss of what I could have done, if anything, differently here. Obviously I have retirements turned on somehow and couldn't find how to change, so this is more a question of how to prevent in the future.

Should I not have promoted Manny as 'quickly' as I did and he felt 'overwhelmed' and quit or was he not happy because his expectation was that he is 'ready for the big leagues' and wasn't promoted?

Losing Lofton and Ramirez has set back the rebuild quite a bit and just trying to prevent this from happening again--if possible.
