11/11/1987 - End of Year Report
It was a tough year for the Phightin' as they finished 71-91, which was the 2nd worst record in the NL and the 5th worst in the majors. This season saw a big turnover on the active roster as well as the minors as the GM started looking towards the future.
Here is an overview of the players who played for the Phils this season:
Catchers- Lance Parrish - 389 AB, .278 19 HR, 69 RBI, 6.7%, 17.3 K%, .328 OBP, .803 OPS, .347 wOBA, 112 wRC+, 2.8 WAR, +2.1 ZR, 33.6 CS% Out until June 1988
- Darren Daulton - 309 AB, .243, 12 HR, 41 RBI, 4 SB, 11.1%, 22.7 K%, .328 OBP, .738 OPS, .323 wOBA, 96 wRC+, 1.2 WAR, -0.5 ZR, 31.5 CS%
- Jamie Quirk - 25 AB, .240, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .321 OBP, 10.7%, 28.6 K%, .841 OPS, .360 wOBA, 120 wRC+, 0.1 WAR - TRADED
- Brian Harper - 1 for 4, 1 BB - FA
Parrish will be out until around June. That will make the Daulton the starter with Nelson, if I resign him, as the likely backup.
Infielders- Juan Samuel - 625 AB, .306, 30 HR, 119 RBI, 33 SB, 6.6 BB%, 17.9 K%, .894 OPS, .380 wOBA, 134 wRC+, 5.3 WAR, +1.9 ZR

- Von Hayes - 308 AB, .308, 15 HR, 42 RBI, 22 SB, 16.4 BB%, 10.3 K%, .948 OPS, .403 wOBA, 149 wRC+, 3.4 WAR, +1.7 ZR as CF, -0.8 ZR as 1B
- Rick Schu - 281 AB, .231, 7 HR, 35 RBI, 4 SB, 4.7 BB%, 17.3 K%, .634 OPS, .272 wOBA, 62 wRC+, -1.0 WAR, -2.0 ZR,
- Steve Jeltz - 198 AB, .207, 0 HR, 19 RBI, 0 SB, 10.1 BB%, 16.7 K%, .557 OPS, .248 wOBA, 46 wRC+, -0.4 WAR, +1.2 ZR

- Mike Gallego - 137 AB, .270, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 0 SB, 11.7 BB%, 10.4 K%, .711 OPS, .302 wOBA, 82 wRC+, 0.7 WAR, -1.3 ZR
- Walt Weiss - 102 AB, .118, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 2 SB, 8.7 BB%, 25.2 K%, .358 OPS, .174 wOBA, 0 wRC+, -0.9 WAR
- Greg Legg - 79 AB, .228, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 2 SB, 11.2 BB%, 7.9 K%, .618 OPS, .286 wOBA, 71 wRC+, -0.3 WAR
- Brian Giles - 32 AB, .219, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB, 18.6 BB%, 25.6 K%, .756 OPS, .333 wOBA, 101 wRC+, 0.1 WAR, +0.1 ZR
Schimdt and Samuel are set at 3B and 2B. I may look to FA for a 1B or play Carmelo Martinez there. Giles, Gallego, or Weiss will compete for the SS job with the others either as the backups or in AAA. Schu and Jeltz will either be released or in AAA. Legg will most likely be kept at AAA. I like his K and BB rates and he can play multiple positions. Hayes had a better season defensively as a CF than 1B. Surprisingly, Schimdt was my worst defender with a -5.0 ZR at 3B and 21 errors. I may consider him at 1B at least some of the time next season.
Outfielders- Carmelo Martinez - 320 AB, .225, 3 HR, 30 RBI, 3 SB, 8.2 BB%, 19.5 K%, .596 OPS, .266 wOBA, 58 wRC+, -1.5 WAR, 0.0 ZR at 1B, -4.0 at RF, -1.2 at LF
- Chris James - 273 AB, .260, 13 HR, 51 RBI, 1 SB, 4.8 BB%, 15.4 K%, .759 OPS, .325 wOBA, 98 wRC+, 0.0 WAR, +1.0 ZR in LF, +0.2 ZR in RF, -8.2 ZR in CF
- Mike Easler - 273 AB, .289, 8 HR, 34 RBI, 0 SB, 7.0 BB%, 16.7 K%, .755 OPS, .325 wOBA, 97 wRC+, -0.3 WAR, -9.2 ZR in LF - TRADED
- Milt Thompson - 222 AB, .248, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 23 SB, 6.7 BB%, 18.8 K%, .626 OPS, .279 wOBA, 67 wRC+, 0.2 WAR, +2.7 ZR in CF - FA
- Greg Gross - 188 AB, .223, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 0 SB, 16.2 BB%, 7.5 K%, .642 OPS, .299 wOBA, 80 wRC+, -0.3 WAR
- Jeff Stone - 146 AB, .233, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 6 SB, 7.5 BB%, 25.5 K%, .688 OPS, .306 wOBA, 85 wRC+, -0.6 WAR, -4.1 ZR in RF
- Keith Miller - 120 AB, .225, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 8 SB, 13.3 BB%, 16.1 K%, .669 OPS, .294 wOBA, 76 wRC+, 0.0 WAR, +1.2 ZR in LF
- Ron Roenicke - 107 AB, .206, 1 HR, 13 RBI, 1 SB, 14.8 BB%, 21.9 K%, .610 OPS, .286 wOBA, 72 wRC+, 0.1 WAR - TRADED
- Rick Lancellotti - 69 AB, .246, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 0 SB, 9.1 BB%, 20.8 K%, .645 OPS, .292 wOBA, 75 wRC+, -0.3 WAR - FA
- Kevin Ward - 67 AB, .313, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 4 SB, 4.3 BB%, 24.3 K%, .880 OPS, .377 wOBA, 132 wRC+, 0.7 WAR, +1.0 ZR in RF
- Louie Meadows - 66 AB, .167, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 10 SB, 11.7 BB%, 23.4 K%, .551 OPS, .244 wOBA, 43 wRC+, 0.0 WAR, +1.6 ZR in CF
- Glenn Wilson - 66 AB, .227, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 0 SB, 4.3 BB%, 8.7 K%, .594 OPS, .263 wOBA, 56 wRC+, 0.0 WAR - TRADED
- Ben Oglivie - 35 AB, .400, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 0 SB, 10.3 BB%, 10.3 K%, .976 OPS, .432 wOBA, 168 wRC+, 0.3 WAR - TRADED
My inital thought is Hayes will start in CF, with James, THompson, Miller and Meadows fighting for the other spots. Gross is a FA and won't be back and Stone will be AAA depth. After looking at defensive stats, I think Martinez would be best suited at 1B
Starters- Bruce Ruffin - 33/33 G/GS, 14-9, 217.1 IP, 18.6 K%, 9.6 BB%, 4.14 ERA, 3.46 FIP, 59% GB, 6.1 WAR
- Kevin Gross - 33/33, 11-17, 204 IP, 20.8 K%, 12.4 BB%, 5.29 ERA, 4.88 FIP, 57% GB, 2.2 WAR
- Mike Maddux - 37/17, 10-7, 160 IP, 21 K%, 12.7 BB%, 4.95 ERA, 4.40 FIP, 54% GB, 2.4 WAR
- Don Carmen - 19/19, 6-7, 137.2 IP, 22.1 K%, 8.2 BB%, 2.75 ERA, 3.61 FIP, 51% GB, 3.6 WAR - TRADED
- Shane Rawley - 14/14, 2-8, 92.1 IP, 14 K%, 9.4 BB%, 6.73 ERA, 4.63 FIP, 57% GB, 1.3 WAR - TRADED
- Joe Cowley - 6/6, 0-4, 29.1 IP, 18.4 K%, 22.7 BB%, 9.51 ERA, 6.68 FIP, 52% GB, -0.2 WAR - FA
- Freddie Toliver - 34/6, 3-3, 77.1 IP, 15.9 K%, 15.6 BB%, 6.28 ERA, 5.58 FIP, 56% GB, 0.0 WAR
- Steve Cummings - 8/8, 1-5, 50.1 IP, 18.9 K%, 16.1 BB%, 5.19 ERA, 4.71 FIP, 49% GB, 0.5 WAR
- Odell Jones - 10/10, 3-5, 50 IP, 18.9 K%, 15.6 BB%, 5.58 ERA, 5.00 FIP, 57% GB, 0.6 WAR - FA
- Len Watts - 6/6, 1-1, 36.1 IP, 20.1 K%, 20.1 BB%, 5.20 ERA, 5.55 FIP, 47% GB, 0.1 WAR
- Craig McMurtry - 11/1, 0-1, 25 IP, 15.8 K%, 22.8 BB%, 11.50 ERA, 8.12 FIP, 52% GB, -0.7 WAR
- Britt Burns - 10/1, 0-1, 14.1 IP, 13.6 K%, 17.5 BB%, 9.42 ERA, 8.68 FIP, 59% GB, -0.5 WAR
I would expect that Ruffin and Gross would be the 1 and 2 unless I get a FA. Then Watts, Cummings and Burns and a few minor leaguers would fight for the last 3 spots. Maddux and Toliver would be better served in the bull pen.
Relievers- Dave Rozema - 29/9 G/GS, 2-5, 83.2 IP, 15.1 K%, 16.4 BB%, 6.67 ERA, 5.19 FIP, 58% GB, 0.4 WAR - FA
- Steve Bedrosian - 38/0, 1-5, 19 SV, 42.1 IP, 27.5 K%, 13.1 BB%, 4.68 ERA, 3.62 FIP, 46% GB, 0.6 WAR - TRADED
- Michael Jackson - 29/0, 2-4, 1 SV, 36.1 IP, 21 K%, 16.5 BB%, 5.20 ERA, 5.14 FIP, 51% GB, -0.1 WAR
- Jesse Orosco - 35/0, 5-3, 3 SV, 32.2 IP, 24.4 K%, 14.0 BB%, 3.31 ERA, 3.61 FIP, 56% GB, 0.5 WAR
- Tom Hume - 21/0, 3-2, 32 IP, 16.5 K%, 14.8 BB%, 6.75 ERA, 6.30 FIP, 64% GB, -0.5 WAR - TRADED
- Ed Nunez - 26/0, 4-1, 17 SV, 32 IP, 28 K%, 11.4 BB%, 0.95 ERA, 2.85 FIP, 44% GB, 0.7 WAR
- Kent Tekulve - 21/0, 0-2, 1 SV, 21 IP, 13.7 K%, 9.6 BB%, 6.43 ERA, 2.86 FIP, 66% GB, 0.5 WAR - TRADED
- Jim Corsi - 17/0, 1-0, 20 IP, 16.9 K%, 15.5 BB%, 1.80 ERA, 4.99 FIP, 58% GB, 0.0 WAR
- John McLarnan - 13/0, 0-1, 18 IP, 15.6 K%, 14.1 BB%, 7.50 ERA, 4.91 FIP, 62% GB, 0.0 WAR
- Dan Scatzeder - 14/0, 2-0, 17.2 IP, 18.8 K%, 11.9 BB%, 4.58 ERA, 4.66 FIP, 53% GB, 0.1 WAR - TRADED
Ed Nunez was outstanding when coming over and will open as my closer. Maddux and Orosco should open in the pen. Corsi, Toliver and Jackson will compete with minor leaguers and any FAs that I sign for the other spots.
