UKBaseballfan and I have been engaged in correspondence for a few days regarding the 1889 Davenport team photo on the previous page which was the basis for the photo found and posted by Chickalooza. Chickalooza provided me with a clearer version of the Davenport photo to enable improved possibilities for identifications of the other major leaguers in the photo. (We have exemplars for the other major leaguers).
Based on our review, UKBaseballfan and I have concluded that the caption to the photo was presented in error. The names should have been presented so that they read from right to left in each row, instead of from left to right. Therefore, the player originally indicated to be Charlie Gessner was really Sam Nicholl. The player who is Charlie Gessner is second from the left in the middle row. An improved version of his image is attached below. Chickalooza has agreed to my posting it.

Tnfoto is aware of these discussions about the Davenport photo. The photo identifications in this photo may be addressed by SABR's Pictorial History Committee in the future, so it's possible that this isn't the end of the story.
