Even with the goalie start settings at 0 for the backup-related ones, the backup will occasionally get used; the only way to avoid that is to always choose the starter manually. Switching a defenceman to goalie will fill the lineup spot that allows you to pass the check to start the game, but he doesn't actually have a proper set of goalie ratings, hence the crash if he has to play. The simplest fix would be to trade for another goalie, even a terrible one, just to fill the spot properly. Even in 1918 there should be at least one or two teams with a third or fourth goalie to spare.
