Standings of the Elyrian Baseball League after 50 games
Trinidad City firm favorites to win National League outright now, Tamarac, New Charleroi and Clayton still far behind
News from around the EBL
5-Hit Game for Cunningham: The East Winslow Buccaneers might think twice next time about pitching to Paul Cunningham.
At J.P. Mech Field today, the New Charleroi Vipers second baseman burned East Winslow pitching, going 5-for-5 in a 6-1 New Charleroi triumph.
"When he's on his game," New Charleroi skipper Steve Boroff told reporters, "he can probably stroke a base hit blindfolded."
Paul Cunningham singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.
Cunningham is currently batting .336 with 1 home run and 9 RBIs.
Pelicans Shut Out Seals, Tuttle Winner: Everything clicked on the hill today for Ryan Tuttle as he hurled the Emmaus Pelicans to a 4-0 shutout win over the Leyden Seals, limiting them to 5 hits while recording 4 strikeouts and yielding 1 walk. He overpowered some batters with fastballs and buckled knees with sharp breaking pitches.
"We had our shot at him a couple of different times," Seals manager Jay Wills said. "We just weren't able to get to him."
For this year Tuttle has chalked up 4 wins and 2 losses in 9 starts with 42 strikeouts in 54.2 innings and a 3.95 ERA.
Carver on the Attack, Player of the Week: Steve Carver is respected by most New Charleroi Vipers fans for his no-frills style of play. The 32-year-old right fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Continentall League Player of the Week honors.
He compiled a .480 average (12-for-25) with 3 home runs, 9 RBIs and 6 runs scored.
Carver has a .366 average and a .414 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 37 hits, 7 home runs and driven in 23 runs.
NL Awards Player of the Week Trophy: His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Jon Marinakis was rewarded with the National League Player of the Week honors.
The scrappy Clayton Crows shortstop hit .467 while collecting 14 hits in 30 at-bats, 1 home run and 8 RBIs.
In 43 games this season Marinakis has batted at a .374 pace with 68 hits and 5 home runs.
Edmonson Stops Bonhomme Cold: In a remarkable performance, Old Town Thugs starter Jeff Edmonson beat the Bonhomme Raiders 8-0 in an impressive 1-hit shutout.
"My arm felt good, mechanics were good and my stuff was working," he said later. "It doesn't get any better than this."
The Thugs hurler finished with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. He showed pinpoint control and a sharp fastball.
"It was a rough one for my guys," Bonhomme manager Daniel Ryan said following the game. "We weren't at our best and their guy was."
This season Edmonson has a 2-6 mark in 10 starts with a 6.24 ERA. He has given up 63 hits in 53.1 innings, struck out 47 and issued 17 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .286 batting average against him.
Katz Holds Jets Scoreless: Paul Katz kept the opposition off the scoreboard and the Ladue Ducks were all smiles after winning 1-0 against the Trinidad City Jets at Webster & Mitchell Ballpark today. The right-handed Katz gave up no runs in his start, permitted 3 hits and had 6 strikeouts.
"If there was a stat for 'team shutout,' this would be it," Katz said later. "My catcher called a great game, guys delivered at the plate and when I messed something up the guys behind me were where they needed to be."
For the season Katz has logged 3 wins and 1 loss and struck out 59 batters in 64 innings while compiling a 2.39 ERA.
Scifres and Kenyon Suspended 6 Games: The shenanigans between the Old Town Thugs and Bonhomme Raiders will leave them a little short-handed for a few games. The Thugs Dustin Scifres and the Raiders Bob Kenyon were suspended by the league for 6 games following the on-field battle this week at Old Town Field.
Scifres currently has a .252 batting average with 35 hits, 5 homers, 21 RBIs, 10 runs scored and a .327 OBP.
On the year, Kenyon has recorded no saves with a 1-0 record over 14.1 innings. He has mowed down 12 batters on strikes and walked 2 with an ERA of 1.26.
Bonhomme Comes up Empty Against Hendley: Old Town Thugs pitcher Nick Hendley blanked the Bonhomme Raiders 6-0 at Bonhomme City Grounds today, tossing a 3-hitter while issuing 1 walk and collecting 8 strikeouts.
After his sharp shutout performance, he shared credit with the rest of the club.
"I was just locked in out there and some of that is due to having a catcher who has such a great feel for hitters," Hendley said. "I couldn't do what I did without all the guys out there today."
This season Hendley has compiled a 1-4 record with a 4.93 ERA.
