With 17 games left to play in the 69 season, Fort Worth looks like they're set to earn a repeat trip to the Southern League championship series.. Coming off a 3 game sweep of the Corpus Christi Beach Bums the Mustangs have a 5 game cushion between themselves and Corpus and a 10 game lead over 3rd place Mobile. Fort Worth is lead by a combo of Ken Griffey Jr and Pete Rose on offense and a trio of pitchers, Frank Viola, Mike McCormick and Vern Law. Wil Myers is also having his best season so far for the Mustangs. Up to this season Myers has been rather inconsistent, looking like a star at times and a dud at others. Corpus has Bill Melton and Harry Heilmann hitting 3rd and 4th in the their lineup. Both are hitting above .340. Melton has 38 bombs and 110+ RBI. Only Ken Griffey Jr. has driven in more runs. On the hill, Jose Guzman is having a career year for the Bums. Jose leads all Southern League pitchers with 21 victories. Mobile has the trio of Kirby Puckett, Bernie Williams and a revitalized Lou Gehrig leading their offense. Van Mungo is once again having a nice year on the mound. Birmingham and Alexandria are 4th and 5th in the standings.
