BBN News Draft Recap - 6/7/1988
The 1988 June Amateur Draft concluded today in New York City. After much debate and mock drafts by the analysts, we finally know who the Chicago White Sox took with the first pick: Mike Piazza, a 19 year old C from a high school in Florida. He projects as a power hitter who may develop into a decent hitter as well.

The Philadelphia Phillies had the 5th pick in today's and had a pick of three different power hitters, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome and Jeff Bagwell. Their GM, Davos Seaworth, explained why then went with Thome: " We liked all three of these guys, but Jim is a 3B with a lot of power who could be the heir apparent to Mike Schmidt, though as a lefty we could envision a move across the diamond to first. He is three years younger than the other two and just as close as being ready."
