Teams have subpar defensive players play in the field all the time for the sake of their bat. Look at J.D. Martinez in the game. A poor LF and even worse 1B, but the Red Sox put him out there every day for his bat.
Now Whatman isn't what J.D. is offensively, but he was an all star several times and is a perennial .300+ hitter while also very popular nationally. If this were real life, Whatman would
definitely start
