How can anyone justify playing Whatman regularly in the outfield? Ignoring the offensive deficiency involved, he is subpar in both corner positions and he has a capgun for an arm. The fact that he is purely a contact hitter with defensive ratings at positions where power is a must only adds to the problems. I would use him as bench depth for the remainder of the season, and play him exclusively in center in spring training in the hopes of making him a decent centerfielder.
