My first thought was that he throws 3 pitches for strikes but on further notice, a. he really doesn't throw them all that well (only the sinker is a major league quality pitch) and there's no change of pace in there, just a two seam fastball, a four seamer, and a slider. They aren't even necessarily low platoon split pitches.

Maybe your rotation is so bad that your manager sees him as a better option than any of your actual starters?
