All Star Break

This will be a brief one:

July 16th, 2021: The mets lost backup catcher Patrick Mazeika for the year with a torn posterior curciate ligament. The 24-year-old was hitting .184/.295/.264 with 2 homers and 19 RBI's in 56 games behind defensive wizard Austin Hedges.

July 17th, 2021: The Rockies lost Trevor Rosenthal for the year with a ruptured bicep tendon. The 31-year-old was having a poor season, 1-6 with 11 saves and a 6.20 ERA. He did, however, strike out 37 in 24.2 innings.

The All-Star game took place today, with the Rays Brendan McKay (10-2, 2.16 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) taking on Noah Syndergaard (5-7, 3.21 ERA, 1.02 WHIP). McKay has been successful as a "two-way" player, hitting .315/.378/.552 but as a designated hitter, so he's just really a pitcher who hits on his off days. He has played 1 game at first, so that's a start. The NL starters look better, and the NL defeated the AL 12-8. Taillon did not pitch, but still earned the honor of being an All-Star.

July 18th, 2021: I made a move to bolster the bullpen, acquiring the Tigers closer Joe Jimenez for 27-year-old minor leaguer Phillip Diehl. I don't know what they see in Diehl, a 1.5* potetnial, but hey, I like Jimenez.

Jimenez, 26, is a 3.5/4* who has earned 12 saves in 34 games. He's 1-4 with a 4.81 ERA and 1.43 WHIP, and on a very affordable contract. He can touch 100 if he tries hard, but has a great three pitch arsenal out of the pen. To make room for him, I optioned Victor Arano to AAA and designated Brian Miller for assignment.

Jimenez will be the new eigth inning guy.

July 19th, 2021: We've stayed consistent at #10 in the Power Rankings.

Baseball was back tomorrow as we began a nice 10 game homestand with three against the Giants. Although not official, I'm guessing we'll see Madison Bumgarner (5-9, 3.38 ERA), Brad Keller (4-6, 5.04 ERA), and Andrew Trigges (3-5, 3.62 ERA) to start the second half. So far, July has been our only month below .500 (7-8) so let's hope that changes by months' end.
