I think a decent argument could be made that basketball didn't work in Vancouver, at least in part, because of having to compete for attention with hockey season. I say in part because the Canucks really weren't very good while the Grizzlies were in Vancouver, making the playoffs just twice in those 6 seasons and losing in the conference quarterfinals both times while never placing higher than 3rd in the conference.

I've read several articles about MLB expanding to Vancouver and this seems to be the consensus opinion as the most important factor for success in a market like Vancouver. It's also the other part of the reason that the Grizzlies didn't work in Vancouver. They were laughably bad all 6 seasons there, finishing with a combined record of 101-359, including an abysmal 8-42 record in the lockout shortened 98-99 season.
