May 8th-May14th
May 8th, 2023: Lewis Brinson is currently suffering quadriceps sorness. It's just a minor, DTD injury, but I'll be limiting his playing time and monitoring his progress. It's also his 29th birthday today!
We've dropped down to 5th in the Power Rankings.
Anyways, Tylor Megill is making his season debut against the Dodgers and Dennis Sanatana (2-2, 7.57 ERA, 1.61 WHIP). I gave Lewis Brinson the day off in favor of Scott Kingery. The game was tied 6-6 heading into extras, but we rallied for an 11-6 win. Of course, we allowed 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th, but still escaped with the win.
Megill was unexpectedly amazing. Just 2 hits and 2 walks with 8 strikeouts in 6 innings. Edward Cabrera allowed 1 in the 8th with a hit, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Joe Jimenez allowed 3 in the 8th off 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. The sturggling Yasukazu Shiotani allowed 2 in the 9th off 4 hits with two strikeouts. He blew the save, but got the win. He's had a rough year, his ERA up to 5.93.
Thomas Dillard did a little bit of everything today, going 3-for-4 with a walk, 2 runs scored, 2 steals, and RBI, and a solo homer. Scott Kingery did well in center, hitting 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored, 3 RBI's, a pair of doubles, and a 10th inning homer. Carlos Soler was 1-for-4 with a walk, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI's, and a home run.
May 9th, 2023: Looking to win the series a day early, Jace Vines (2-1, 4.45 ERA, 1.48 WHIP) took on 23-year-old Robinson Ortiz (1-2, 4.35 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) with Brinson back in the line up. We scored 4 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th and won 10-7.
Vines had a rough outing, 4 innings with 7 hits, 6 runs, 4 walks, and just a single strikeout as the year hasn't turned out quite how he wanted it. Max Povse tossed 2 mop up innings with 3 strikeouts. Edward Cabrera earned the win, pitching a scorless 7th with Luiz Gohara earning a hold in a scorles 8th. Felipe Rivero gave up a first pitch homer in the 9th, and Shiotani shut the door for his 6th save.
Ryan Mountcastle had a great game, 4-for-5 with a double and homer to go with 2 RBI's. Jose Ramirez was 2-for-5 with a homer, a steal, 3 runs scored, and 3 driven in. Brendan Rodgers was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and a sac fly. Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a walk, double, and two runs scored. Thomas Dillard hit a pinch hit 2-run double. He's day to day with a bruised thigh.
Chris Sale tossed a 1-hit shutout and struck out 11 as the Mets beat Arizona 4-0.
May 10th, 2023: We got the brooms ready as Jordan Montgomery (2-1, 3.00 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) took on Gerrit Cole (1-3, 3.16 ERA, 0.99 WHIP). Both Dillard and Brinson got the day off. We allowed 5 in the 8th to drop the finale 5-4.
Montgomery was great, just 5 hits with 2 strikeouts in 7 innings. Rivero was charged with 4 runs off 4 hits with 2 strikeouts, while Koda Glover got the loss, allowing a solo homer and getting the final out of the 8th.
Jose Ramirez was 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, and a double. Adam Haseley was 2-for-4 with a run scored, RBI, and a double. Brendan Rdgers was 1-for-2 with a double, but was taken out for percautionary reasons after bruising his finger sliding into second.
Eloy Jimenez rapped 5 hits in 6 trips during a 15-10 win over the Phillies as the White Sox continued their strong start.
Sort of good sidenote: I have $35+ million for extensions, but Montgomery wants $25 per year... I really want to keep him, but that's a ton of cash. He's pitching in his 5th season in Miami, and has never had an ERA over 4 in his career.
May 11th, 2023: Today was an off day we'd use to travel to San Diego. They are also leading thier division at 22-11, while we are 23-12. We have a 4 game lead over Washington, they have a 4 game lead over Arizona. We'd see Mackenzie Gore (2-1, 4.62 ERA), Sam Runion (1-0, 4.29 ERA), and Dinelson Lamet (3-3, 5.30 ERA).
May 12th, 2023: Jameson Taillon (5-2, 4.04 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) took on Mackenzie Gore (2-1, 4.62 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) as we opened a tough season with a very tough team. The Padres bested us 4-1 in front of their home crowd. The worst loss was the pair of injuries to Koda Glover and Joe Jimenez, and I'd await his diagnosis.
Taillon allowed 4 runs off 5 hits with 5 strikeouts in 5 innings. The rest of the pen combined for 3 innings, 4 hits, a walk, and 2 strikeouts.
We didn't hit much, just 3 hits including a single by the pitcher Taillon. Scott Kingery was 0-for-1 with a walk, steal, and sac fly. Adam Haseley was 1-for-3 with a walk and double. The last hit was a single for Lewis Brinson.
May 13th, 2023: Loda Glover is headed to the DL with back tightness and will miss 1-2 weeks. RHP Brett Conine will be recalled to replace him. In 6.2 innings, he is 1-1 witht 3 saves, a 1.35 ERA, and a 1.05 WHIP with 5 strikeouts.
The Cardinals will be without LHP Kyle McGrath for the rest of the season with a torn labrum. This was his first year in St. Louis after spending 2017=2022 with the Padres.
The Cubs lost former Marlin RHP Sandy Alcantra for the year with a damaged elbow ligament. We sent him to Chicago for fellow righty Alex Lange way back in 2018.
Walker Buehler (4-0, 2.88 ERA, 0.93 WHIP) took the mound against Sam Runion (1-0, 4.29 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) as we looked to bounce back quickly. If get blown out 10-2 is what that means, then we succeeded...
It wasn't all on Buehler, who allowed 5 runs off 5 hits in 5.1 innings with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. Felipe Rivero continued his rough season, allowing 3 runs off 2 hits and a walk in 0.2 innings. The last two runs came off Edward Cabrera in the 8th off 2 walks, 2 htis, and a strikeout.
Not going to lie, I'm already regretting the Rivero signing...
We didn't hit much, but Nick Gordon was 2-for-3 with a walk, steal, and run scored. Carlos Soler was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.
May 14th, 2023: The Angels got some bad news, with recently acquired SP Sean Hjelle headed to the DL for the rest of the year with a torn labrum. Between LA and Cleveland in 7 starts, he's 1-2 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.
We looked to avoid the sweep and stop our three game skid with Tylor Megill (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.67 WHIP) taking on Dinelson Lamet (3-3, 5.30 ERA, 1.60 WHIP). Soler hates Lamet, a career 0-for-11 against the 30 year old. We scored 4 in the 8th to take a 9-7 lead, but allowed 4 in the bottom half to fall 11-9...
Shockingly, Rivero didn't allow the run, he pitched a perfect 7th with 2 strikeouts. Megill allowed 4 in 5 with 5 hits, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Brett Conine allowed 3 off 3 hits and 2 walks in 0.2 innings for his seaosn edbut. Tyler Jay allowed a leadoff single in the 8th that eventually scored, and Max POvse allowed 3 more with 4 hits while recording just 2 of the 3 outs, before Luiz Gohara got a strikeout to end the frame.
Soler had a great game, 3-for-4 witha run scored and 3 RBI's. Thomas Dillard was 2-for-5 with a three run homer. Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a run scored and base clearing double. Jose Ramirez was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The Tigers Franklin Perez tossed a 4-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over the White Sox.
A very interesting story, while browsing the Michigan baseball team for a player I thought was on the team, I was unsuccessful, but instead fround Christian Bullock, a player I selected in the 14th round back in 2019. I had no idea, but I played against him while he was in High School at Morgan Park. I didn't know his name back when we played, but there was a scout for the Giants in attendance for a "Michigan commit" on the other team. Now he's in my organization in A- Batavia and has been in the orgnaization since draft day.
Tomorrow was a much needed day off, as our lead has fallen to just 2...
