But obviously the Maple Leaf itself was still a symbol even then, so the logo still works.

Nice to know the history, but that flag would look like $&!+ as the background... This is not meant to be a historical league, just a retro theme... Maybe this one just utilizing the upper left portion of that flag will suit your needs better than the maple leaf one...
