July 4th-July 9th
July 4th, 2023: Jake Junis (3-3, 4.24 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) opened the series in Atlanta against Lucas Sims (11-2, 2.17 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) who has been dominate all season. The Braves got 7 in the 2nd and piled on a total of 14 runs in the 14-2 win.
Junis had an awful start, 9 runs and 8 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in 3 innings. Ohtani tossed 2.1 mop up innings with 3 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks, and a strikeout. Phil Maton got the last 2.2 innings, with 2 hits, a run, a walk, and 4 strikeouts.
Brendan Rodgers was 2-for-4 with a solo homer. Seth Beer was 1-for-3 with a solo homer. Cole Roederer was 1-for-3 with a steal. Tomorrow better be better...
Aaron Judge hit his 300th homer in a 9-7 Yankees win over the Angels. It took the 31 year old just 1,005 games to reach 300.
July 5th, 2023: The International guy I wanted signed with Cleveland for the maximum $5,900,000 bonues instead of signing my max deal...
We looked to bounce back with Walker Buehler (8-4, 3.76 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) taking on Joey Wentz (4-7, 4.11 ERA, 1.39 WHIP). The Braves got 3 in the 6th, and that was enough for the 3-1 win.
Buehler allowed all 3 in 5.2 innings with 5 hits, a walk, and 6 strikeouts. Ben Popkin made his big league debut with 2 hitless innings, a walk, and 2 strikeouts.
Cole Roederer was 1-for-3 with a solo homer. Mickey Moniak was 3-for-4 with a double. Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a double. We needed to learn how to win on the road...
And in case you are wondering where all are unsigned players went:
1st Round: RHP Kevin Sturgeon (Virginia 2024)
3rd Round: 1B Ben Kempf (Michigan State 2024)
9th Round: CF Sean Bair (Stanford 2024)
13th Round: SS Danny Deliso (U.C. Santa Barbra 2026)
15th Round: CF Ken Ormand (New Orleans 2024)
16th Round: CF Jeremy Page (Ball State 2026)
19th Round: SP Juan Arteaga (Florida State 2026)
25th Round: SP Juan AlyArez (Notre Dame 2026)
29th Round: SP Braedon Chiasson (TCU 2024)
30th Round: CF Sean Addis (VCU 2026)
33rd Round: C Jonathan Hall (Texas 2026)
34th Round: CF Juan Rivera (Virginia 2026)
35th Round: CF Nate Cody (Cal-State Fulerton 2026)
37th Round: SP Luis Ospina (East Carolina 2026)
38th Round: SP Murdoch Pardy (Waterloo 2026)
The game does have the rollover picks included on the draft order, so I think it's all good.
July 6th, 2023: I claimed RHP Shane Smith and sent Dustin May (already cleared waivers) to AAA. Smith is rated a 2.5/3 with a 94 rated curveball.
The Mets will be without RHP Shane Greene for the year with a damaged elbow ligament. In his first season in New York, he was 1-0 with a 3.90 ERA.
In other New York news, the Yankees will be without CF Clint Frazier for the year with a broken kneecap. He was hitting .230 with 13 homers and 35 RBI's.
We looked to avoid the sweep with Jordan Montgomery (6-1, 3.08 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) taking on Mike Soroka (6-4, 2.77 ERA, 0.94 WHIP). The bats finally woke up, and we took the finale 6-2.
Montgomery wsa hurt after Soroka hit him with a pitch... He left after 2 innings with 2 hits and a run. Edward Cabrera earned the win, tossing 3.1 innings with a hit and a strikeout. Smith made his Marlins debut, allowing a solo homer and getting a strikeout in 0.2 innings while earning a hold. Ben Popkin got one as well, 2 innings with a hit and 4 strikeouts. We scored 2 in the top of the 9th, but Shiotani still took the 9th and struck out 2 in a non-save situation.
I swear, if Montgomery is out for any length of time becasue of this... The hit by pitch looked to be in retaliation for hitting Jeff Houghtby in the 2nd, but I doubt there was any intent in that...
Thomas Dillard was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, a walk, and 3 total RBI's. Seth Beer was 2-for-3 with 2 walks and a 2 run homer in the first. Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a steal and a run scored. Scott Kingery was 2-for-4 with a run scored, RBI, and a double.
The Rays' Jacob Faria tossed a 4-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Cleveland. He struck out 8 and allowed just 4 hits.
We're off to Chicago to face the Cubs for three. They share our 50-35 record and sit atop their division as well. We'd see Justin Dunn (10-3, 3.91 ERA), Robbie Ray (8-5, 5.26 ERA), and Pablo Ochoa (7-7, 3.88 ERA).
July 7th, 2023: Montgomery has a bruised knee and will miss 6 days, so that means his next start. I had numerous guys I could call apon for his start.
I signed 17-year-old SS Sergio Cardenas to a $950,000 bonus. He's got a lot of work, but is rated as a 2.5 potential with elite defense. His range and arm are elite, and with pracitce, he could play any infield position, although short is his best option now.
The Mariners will be without 2B Luis Arrez for the rest of the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. If you remember, way back in April he had a 5-hit game.
We opened the series with the Cubs with A.J. Puckett (4-2, 4.67 ERA, 1.70 WHIP) facing Justin Dunn (10-3, 3.91 ERA, 1.20 WHIP). The Cubs got 2 in the 6th and won the opener 2-1.
Puckett pitched well, 5.2 innings with 3 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Tyler Jay left with an injury after 0.2 innings of perfect baseball. His diagnosis is still pending.
It was a rough game, with just 3 htis. Nick Feight had two of them, a double and single in three trips. The last hit was a Nick Gordon single. Brendan Rodgers scored the only run after drawing a walk in the 8th inning.
Nationals 3B Tanner Kholhepp was 5-for-6 in a loss to the Brewers. The Rookie hasn't had the best success in the pros, but the former 2018 3rd rounder looks like a future star. It seems like every team has a star from that 2018 draft except us, although Seth Beer was selected by the Pirates in that draft.
July 8th, 2018: With the Mets just 3.5 games back, Jace Vines (3-6, 5.79 ERA, 1.75 WHIP) looked to pick up the win against Robbie Ray (8-5, 5.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP). We did what we do best, lose on the road, this time 4-1.
Vines went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. The rest of the pen pitched 3 innings with 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts.
We only had 3 hits. Shoehi Ohtani was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored the only run. Lewis Brinson dove him in on a sacrafice fly. The last hit was a Jose Ramirez single, although he was injured in a collision while base running. He's off to the DL for 1-2 weeks with a sore elbow.
The Rangers Josh Bell was 5-for-6 in a 19-2 win over the Cardinals. His teammate Scott Schebler was 5-for-6 as well.
July 9th, 2023: All-Star update: Dillard remains in 1st, and Montgomery and Buehler maintain 3rd and 4th.
I called up 3B Nolan Gorman to make his big league debut. The 23-year-old was selected in the 3rd round of the 2018 draft by the Orioles, directly after Seth Beer.
We looked to avoid the sweep with Jake Junis (3-4, 5.37 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) looking to bounce back after a dreadful start. He'd face Pablo Ochoa (7-7, 3.88 ERA, 1.31 WHIP). Gorman hit 8th and would play the hot corner in the finale. We fell 6-2 as the horrid road trip comes to a conclusion.
Junis allowed 6 in 6 off 8 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts, and I'm searching vigorously for my recipt of the trade...
Ohtani had a good game, 3-for-4 with both RBI's and a pair of doubles. Nick Gordon was 1-for-3 with a walk. Seth Beer was 1-for-3 with a run scored and walk. Gorman was 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in his debut.
Mike Trout, the best hitter of this generation, crushed his 400th career homer in a 4-2 win over the Twins. The Angels slugger recorded this homer in his 1,725th career game. Already worth a whopping 82.5 WAR, if he retired today, he'd be a Hall of Famer. Luckily for baseball, he has years to go!
Well, we're up just 1.5 games over the Mets, but would return home for three against the Braves. We'd look to turn it around against Joey Wentz (5-7, 3.94 ERA), Mike Soroka (6-5, 2.90 ERA), and Sean Wymer (2-3, 2.32 WHIP). Soroka better get one at his head... Just kidding, I love him in real life, but this is a video game so it's ok.
