  • 12/1 WINTER MEETINGS BEGIN
  • TARPONS SEND BALDWIN TO DETROIT
  • Florida has dealt 26-year-old starter Jamie Baldwin (3-17 7.77) to the Detroit Phantoms for 2 prospects. 22-year-old reliever Eddie Friend ( 3rd round by Detroit in 2005 draft) and 25 year old slugging 1B/OF Pat Norman were sent to Florida. Norman was drafted in 2001 by the Jets in the 8th round and returned to Cal for his senior year. He went undrafted in 2002 and signed on with the Phantoms. In 91 AAA games, he's hitting .297/.417/.507 with 16 HR and 63 RBI. The left-handed hitter is a very good defender at first as well as an above-average left fielder. Runs better than most guys manning the corner.
  • The rule 5 is coming up, as are the winter meetings. There was no chance I was bringing Baldwin back after a 17 loss season. While it certainly wasn't fair to many of the arms on this staff a change of scenery, as well as a spot on the 38 man, were the driving factors here.
  • 12/2 Denver continues an aggressive winter signing former LA Storm catcher Dan Cluff to a 2 year 5.04 million dollar deal. Cluff is coming off a .263-15-63 season and his 3rd career gold glove.
  • 12/4 Winter meetings end. I have some lines in the water and am hoping to get some results rather quickly. Working the minor league free agent market fervently as much for some AAAA talent as the hidden 18-19-year-old 'diamond in the rough'.
  • LA Storm closer Gerjan Fredericks is apparently close to signing with the Miners in what would be another major blow to the Storm and their winter of, discontent.
  • In the meantime, LA is scrambling to refill a depleted pitching staff and today they dealt left fielder Luis Romero to Minnesota for 39-year-old SP Mike Kennedy. Kennedy is a 2-time world champion as well as the 1993 Koufax winner for Detroit. A lot of odd looks on this one as Romero finished 3rd in the NL's Jackie Robinson voting and Kennedy is coming off a 7-8 6.13 year. It was just the 2nd year in a 15 year career in which he made under 30 starts. Scouts still rave about his overall stuff. He's 211-121 3.91 over 2970.1 innings with 3151 strikeouts. He ranks 4th overall in innings pitched in ABA history, 2nd in wins being just one of two pitchers to surpass the 200 win mark (along with Detroit's Chris Mattingly) 1st in HR allowed with 490 and 2nd all-time in strikeouts behind Chris Towns (3361) (he's 1st all-time among active pitchers) as well as 6th all-time in WAR.
