League Championship Series and World Series
October 15th, 2023: The A's-Rays series starts first in Tampa today. Oakland tallied 9 runs to take the opener 9-3.
October 15th, 2023: Walker Buehler (13-7, 3.40 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) took on 34-year-old veteran Sam Runion (8-3, 3.83 ERA, 1.30 WHIP who really shouldn't be a big league pitcher. But he's had an amazing season, and even beat us earlier in the year. He was too much again, as we dropped the opener 4-2.
Buehler allowed 4 runs in 6.2 innings with 5 hits an 8 strikeouts. Koda Glover and Joe Jimenez combined for the last 1.1 innings with 2 strikeouts.
We had just 6 singles all game. Jose Ramirez was 2-for-4 and scored. Cole Roederer was 1-for-4 and drove in both runs with a single. Mickey Moniak was 2-for-4. Seth Beer was 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
Tampa evened the series with a 6-4 win as the series shifts to Oakland.
October 17th, 2023: We looked to even the series with Jordan Montgomery (8-3, 3.56 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) taking on Chris Rodriguez (9-12, 3.73 ERA, 1.26 WHIP). We were shutout 3-0 and headed home down 2-0...
Monty allowed 2 runs in 6 innings off 5 hits, a walk, and 6 strikeouts. Tyler Jay pitched the 7th and allowed a solo homer.
We had just 4 hits today, and again, all singles. Moniak, Ohtani, Ramirez, and Gordon had the hits.
October 18th, 2023: Oakland took a 2-1 lead with a 6-1 win at home.
October 19th, 2023: Okay, we've got three at home starting with Jameston Taillon (7-6, 4.74 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) taking on MacKenzie Gore (6-6, 4.39 ERA, 1.20 WHIP). We have to show the home fans what we're made of! And that's exactly what happened, as the bats rallied for 8 in the 2nd en route to a 13-3 win.
Taillon left with injury, after 2.2 perfect innings with 2 K's. Corbin Burnes replaced him, 1.2 innings with a hit, walk, 2 strikeouts, and the win. Phil Maton allowed 2 in 1.1 with 2 hits, a walk, and 2 strikeouts. Tyler Jay allowed 1 more with a walk, hit, and strikeout in 0.2 innings.
We actually only had 10 hits, but more then hald were for extra bases. Seth Beer hoemered twice in 2 at bats with a walk. He hit a solo shot and three run shot. Nick Feight hit a pinch hit solo homer, and latere walked and scored. Shoehi Ohtani was 2-for-4 with a run scored, 2 driven in, and a walk to go with a home run. Lewis Brinson was 1-for-4 with a double, run scored, walk, and 2 driven in. Jose Ramirez was 2-for-4 with 3 RBi's and two runs scored.
Oakland is a game away from the World Series after winning 5-3.
October 20th, 2023: Taillon was diagnosed with a strained shoulder and will miss the rest of the playoffs. A.J. Puckett wil replace him on the playoff roster.
Jake Florence (13-11, 4.15 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) got today's start against Dinelson Lamet (10-8, 4.58 ERA, 1.49 WHIP) as we looked to even the series. After 9 innings it was tied 2-2. We alowed a run in the 11th, and we're down 3-2. Nick Feight tied it up with a pinch hit RBI single. The next batter what Thomas Dillard, who doubled and drove in the winning run as we walked off 4-3 winners!
Florence was effectively wild, 6 innings with 6 walks, just 1 hit, 1 run, and 44 strikeouts. Ben Popkin allowed a run on 2 hits in 0.2 innings with 2 strikeouts in the 7th. Joe Jimemnez allowed a run in his 2nd inning of relief work, but struck out 3 and allowed just 1 hit to get the "win" since we walked off in the bottom frame.
Brendan Rodgers was 1-for-4 with a solo shot. Today's hero Dillard was 2-for-3 with the walk-off RBI double and 3 walks. Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Shoehi Ohtani was 2-for-5.
Champagne was popped in Oakland as the A's beat Tampa 6-2 to clinch a World Series spot. They'd open the Series in either San Diego, or hopefully, Miami.
October 21st, 2023: The Yankees inked LHP Chasen Shreve to a 2-year, $7,600,000 extension to stay in New York. He's coming off a 4-4 season with a 3.80 ERA.
Our last home game of the series took place between Walker Buehler (13-7, 3.40 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) and Sam Runion (8-3, 3.83 ERA, 1.30 WHIP). If you noticed, I've been posting the regular season statistics and not included the playoffs, since on the game screen it just shwos regular season numbers. The Padres got one in the 9th to take the game 2-1 and head to San Diego with a 3-2 lead.
Nick Gordon left with an injury that hopefully isn't serious...
Buehler pitched well, 6 innigns with 2 hits, a run, 6 walks, and 8 strikeouts. Tyler Jay got the loss, a run off a hit and 2 walks in 0.2 innings.
Seth Beer was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, his 5th homer of the postseason. He's hitting .394 and has driven in 10. Mickey Moniak and Shoehi Ohtani were both 1-for-4, although Moniak recorded a steal.
October 22nd, 2023: The Cubs extended former Marlin Reynaldo Lopez to a 2-year, $13,200,000 deal. The 29-year-old was 5-5 with a save and 4.64 ERA.
October 23rd, 2023: Nick Gordon has an oblique strain and I have to pace him on the DL. I'm recalling 3B Nolan Gorman to replace him.
Gorman is playing SS and hitting 8th as Jordan Montgomery (8-3, 3.56 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) looks to extend our season another game against Chris Rodriguez (9-12, 3.73 ERA, 1.26 WHIP).
Well, it was a good run, and we were shut out 8-0...
Montgomery allowed 5 runs in 4 innings off 5 hits, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Koda Glovera allowed 3 (2 earned) more in 0.2 innings with 2 walks, a hit, and a strikeout. Phil Maton and A.J. Puckett tossed 3.1 shutout innings with 3 hits, a walk, and 4 strikeouts.
We only got three hits, a pair of doubles and a single. Nolan Gorman was 1-for-2 in his postseason debut with a double and walk. Ohtani was 1-for-4 with a double. Joe Ramirez was 1-for-3 with a single.
Our season ends today, so close to the beautiful World Series...
I don't care too much about the Series, so there isn't going to be a game by game update.
I hat to release Mike Clevinger, since he's now healthy, but also an impending free agent and it wasn't worth making room for him on the 40.
Those Padres are just too good, and beat the A's 4-1 to win the first World Series in their history. Hopefully, they'll just tear down so I can win next season!
The offseason starts tomorrow!
