Week 6

SUBJECT: WEEK 6 NOTES
SCHEDULE:
3 @ Brooklyn
OFF DAY
3 vs Alaska

RESULTS:
  • 5/8: FLA 7 BRK 5 4 run 9th turns a 5-3 deficit into a win. Benoit SV (10) Pergande 3-4 2 RBI Figueroa HR (5)
  • Omari Bethea 3-4 HR (5) 3 RBI
  • Minnesota RF Brendan Dullinger went 5-5 in a 9-3 win over Las Vegas.
  • Farmington was beaten 11-10 by Chesapeake and in the game, Esteban Cobos went 3-5 to extend his streak to 43
  • Denvers Ben Austin punched out a season-high 16 in a 9-1 win over Detroit. He's 4-1 3.83 with 63 K's in 42.1 IP
  • In a Class A game today the Bethel Falcons beat the Haileah River Sharks 18-8. In the game, the Falcons 4 and 5 hitters combined to go 8-9 with 6 HR. Both guys hit 3 each. They scored 7 and drove in 10.

    LUIS MORA SCOUTING REPORT
20-year-old RF Eric Barros is in his Jr year for the California Golden Bears. A 6'2” 195 pounder his bat is one of the top college bats in the draft. He's got a 30+ HR 50-60 XBH potential. He's a below average runner but looks to be an above-average defender with a cannon for an arm. He crushes right-handed pitching but struggles versus lefties. If he can't seem to improve it could force him into a R/L platoon role. That right there makes me take this kid out of the first round. Certainly not a #1 overall pick. He's a 3* ceiling guy in my opinion.

  • 5/9: BRK 2 FLA 1 Geoff Gilmore commits a walk-off error to break 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th Agresta 8 IP 9 K 2 H 4 BB 2 ER
  • AA Corvalis staff put the collar on Esteban Cobos as he went 0-4 to end his record 43 game hitting streak.

    LUIS MORA SCOUTING REPORT
Ismael Saldana is the best bat in the draft. A senior at Texas Tech and having another monster season. He's a 1st baseman and a good one, but can also play left and right and has a cannon. He has the potential to be an offensive force all his own. Runs well. I think he's ready for AA now, maybe even AAA, his bat is that far along. The 22-year-old is going to anchor someone's lineup. He's an A- for me. I have his ceiling at 3* but that's being modest and cautious. There are two 'drawbacks'. He cannot hit LHP for his life and our park favors the RH power bat. Another lefty who may have to platoon to get the most out of him.

  • 5/10: BRK 8 FLA 4 Pen blows 4-3 lead giving up 5 in the 8th.
  • San Antonio lefty Curt Hanning beat Pittsburgh 5-0 today. He punched out 12 to move to 3-2 4.56 and has 64 K's in 51.1 IP this year. Hanning was acquired from New England this winter in a deal that sent 26-year-old 1B Troy Tulowitzki to the Minutemen.
  • Memphis SP Seb Broomhall will miss the remainder of the year after having surgery to remove bone chips.

    MANAGERS OFFICE
The lineup feels 'off'. There are some guys struggling and the need to rearrange both are pressing. After much discussion and deep diving into the numbers here are the new lineups for the rest of this week. It should be noted that Geoff Gilmore's BABIP is .160 and Hayashi's is .189. I absolutely expect some regression to the mean. Likewise, Luis Figueroa is living life right with a BABIP of .410.

    LUIS MORA SCOUTING REPORT
Jonathan Claypool is a left hander out of Illinois. He's currently 5-4 2.95 with 98 K 10 BB in 76.1 IP. Kid sits low 90's with 3 + pitches. His pure stuff is AA ready now. Still needs innings though. His change up and split are going to be ++ pitches. Shuts down the running game exceptionally well. FWIW he placed 3rd in the NCAA AD Pitcher of the year last year. He will definitely go in the 1st round and if I had any concerns it would be that all of this talent is packaged in a 5'10” frame. He's 22 so I don't know if there's much left growth wise. He competes like hell but I don't know if we're looking at a 200+ IP guy or not. I give him a 2.5* ceiling today and a draft grade of B+
