TRADE DEADLINE NEWS
Las Vegas, Florida, beat the deadline with a blockbuster
Las Vegas GM Shawn Barton steps up to the podium.
“Thank you all for coming on such short notice. This deal happened literally out of nowhere. A casual conversation turned into what we're about to announce and I don't think I, nor Gehrig, intended anything of this magnitude.
I'd like to announce that the Las Vegas Aces have acquired the services of Ted Barlow, Closer Joaquin Benoit, infielder Bobby Pergande and two prospects, as well as the Tarpons 20th pick.
Before anyone attempts to congratulate me I'll tell you this. We got significantly better today but we did so at an extreme cost.
We sent our top 2 starting pitching prospects, who were also our #1 selections in the 2003 and 2005 drafts, in Chad Willoughby and Kody Pollock, and a kid I think is the best overall relief prospect in the minors in Sam Ginn, OF Tomiji Takamoto, a young man on the cusp of being an ABA regular and finally we sent them our 2nd round pick in the 2007 amateur draft. I have to tell you quite honestly that as a GM of a team in contention, this might be the first trade I've ever made that I would be glad to be on either side of. I think the Tarpons got infinitely better in the long run and I think we feel we are now as good as a team as there is in the game”
Meanwhile in Miami.....
Gehrig Schilling steps to the podium:
“Folks thanks for coming on such short notice. I am about to announce a trade that I would bet no one, including myself, saw coming. We've made no bones about our desire to build something here. A franchise that wins year in and year out. What this team has done this year is nothing short of amazing and for that, I owe these players all the credit. Almost an entirely new roster came together in spring training and what they've done through today is nothing short of a miracle.
Having said that I am here to announce the following. Please hold all comments and questions until I am done.
I have sent starting pitcher Ted Barlow, closer Joaquin Benoit, Infielder Bobby Pergande and two prospects, OF Mike Eddins and C Ken Mack, to the Las Vegas Aces. Oh, I also sent them our 20th round pick in the 2007 draft.
In return, we have acquired the Aces top three pitching prospects and a young outfielder as well as their 2nd round pick in the 2007 draft.
Let me give you a quick rundown on each player we have acquired.
Chad Willoughby was Vegas' 1st round pick (9th overall) in the 2003 draft out of California. He came in as the games 40th rated prospect this year. He's a big kid and throws from the right side. He's probably ready to come up right now be he'll head to Alamogordo.
Kody Pollock was Vegas' 1st round pick (14th overall) in the 2005 draft out of Georgia Tech. He was the 38th rated prospect in 2006. He was the NCAA Pitcher of the Year in 2003 2004 as well as a 3 time all American. He's just 22 and a mid 90's left-hander we expect to be, along with Chad, at the top of our rotation for years to come. He's a clubhouse presence as well. He'll likely head to Clovis.
Sam Ginn was acquired by Las Vegas from Pittsburgh just last week. He was the Miners 3rd rounder (75th overall) in the 2003 draft after an All-American season for the Fighting Illini. He's an upper 90's power arm we expect to be closing out games for us in the near future.
24-year-old Tomiji Takimoto was signed as an International FA out of Japan in 1999. He's done nothing but his since then. His right-handed power bat is well suited for the Tarpon Tank and he's a RF by trade. Very good zone awareness with well above average power that we think hasn't fully matured yet. He will head to AAA Alamogordo.
Finally, we managed to snag the 2nd round pick Vegas has in the 2007 draft, This was not a 'throw in' for either side. We recognize that if we don't plan the get extravagant in the market each winter we must use the June draft as our most precious commodity and we treat those picks as such. This was a huge piece in this deal..
- Veteran SP Luca Martignoni is recalled to take Barlow's rotation spot
- Reliever Brad Turner is recalled to take Benoit's spot in the pen
- 25-year-old Ron Turner is added to the 38 man and recalled. He's a supreme defender all around the IF and has good enough zone discipline that the lack of offense he might have will be offset in his ability to both get on base and run.
- Pollock is sent to AA Clovis, Willoughby and Takimoto and Ginn to AAA Alamogordo
- Pollock will take the ball for Clovis today
- Juan Madrid will take over the closer's role and Turner will be the LH setup man with Grab from the right side.
- 7/31: PHX 5 FLA 0 Steve Wimer ABA debut 8.1 scoreless, 7 H 5 K W.
- Chase L (12-6) 5.2 IP 8 H 5 ER. Not how I was hoping to kick this post-trade debut off.
- Alamogordo wins 17-1, newly acquired OF Tomiji Takamoto goes 3-3 walks twice hits 2 homer runs, scores 5 times and drives in 2 (that's better...) Sam Ginn tosses a scoreless 9th.
- In his Clovis debut, Pollock goes 7.1 8 H 3 K 0 BB 4 ER for the win.
- LA's Toshiyoshi Fujii went 5-5 with 4 RBI in a 14-1 win over San Antonio
- 6 days ago the New York Punishers managed to swing a deal for Milwaukee closer Jake Garvin. His tenure lasted all of 1.2 innings. He was put on the 60 day DL today and will undergo shoulder surgery for an undisclosed injury.
- 8/1: FLA 5 PHX 2 Hayashi 2-4 2B HR (35) 2 RBI Ramirez W (11-2 3.71) 5.2 IP 7 K 0 BB 1 ER Madrid SV (3)

- At Rio Rancho 9th round pick Jeremy Jones went 4-4 with 2B HR scored 3 times and drove in 2. The shortstop is hitting .329-6-36 in 39 games since signing.
- 8/4: BRK 12 FLA 2 Mike Keener 7.1 IP 8 K 2 ER W (2-5) Dan Goodman 3-4 2 HR 5 RBI (.309-22-86)
- Martignoni L 4 IP 8 H 8 ER 5 HR
- Chad Willoughby made his first AAA start going 6 IP 7 H 5 K 4 ER in a ND
- Clovis was crushed 16-2 today and SP Arturo Mendoza gave up 7 ER in just 3.1 IP. Israel Saldana went 2-4 with a triple, HR and an RBI
- MVP and former World Series Champion Joe Jackson (OK) hit his 500th career home run today. He is just the 9th player ever to accomplish the feat. He has hit .273 with 500 HR (9th all-time) and 1415 career RBI's (11th all time)
DRILLERS ACQUIRE SAIZ FROM TARPONS
The Oklahoma Drillers have acquired veteran starter Jorge Saiz from the Florida Tarpons as well as minor league prospects Mitch Boozer (P) and SS Ignacio Camargo and the Tarpons 5th round draft choice in 2007. Oklahoma had to send top outfield prospect Zach Astor to Florida to complete the deal.
Astor was the Drillers 3rd round draft choice out of Texas Tech in this June's draft.
Saiz is 43-51 5.39 career as well as a 2 time World Champion with Detroit in 2002 and 2003. He has struck out 845 in 874 IP with 323 walks and 909 hits. He was 7-8 4.69 with AAA Alamogordo this season. The 34-year-old was sent to AAA Stillwater.
I didn't think Saiz would clear waivers. This looks like 'a lot' for one minor league player. And the draft pick was almost a bridge too far. But Astor is a guy Luis Mora and our scouts are far higher on than most others around the league. They're saying he's a potential 50 HR guy, which I think most are ok with but around the league no one thinks he'll make enough contact or enough solid contact to even hit .250. Our guys think he's a possible .275-.300 guy. He's just 21, and a horse at 6'3” 200. He's a corner outfielder that needs a lot of work. No speed to speak of but has a very good arm and above average hands. His lack of range likely means he'll end up in left. He's another potential RH power bat.
- 8/5: BRK 6 FLA 1 Chad Ragan W (6-7 3.94) 8 IP 3 H 1 ER came out with a stiff back in the 9th.
- Camp L (6-9 4.24) 5 IP 7 H 4 ER Figueroa 15th error
- Kody Pollack threw an 8 inning CG losing 3-1. Punched out 8 and gave up 6 hits.
- 13th round draft pick Chris Wallace tied a Rio Rancho record with 13 K's over 8 innings of a 6-2 win today. He walked 1 gave up 5 hits and allowed just an earned run.
- 8/6: BRK 6 FLA 2 Chase L (12-7 4.02) 5 IP 5 BB 7 H 6 ER
- Luis Acevedo W (10-4 4.47) CG 7 K 2 ER Dan Goodman 2-3 2 BB 2 HR 4 RBI
